The University of Madras

University of Madras is the mother of almost all the old Universities of Southern India. In 1854, the Government of India formulated a systematic educational policy for India and as sequel on 5th September 1857 by an act of Legislative Council of India the University of Madras was established. The University was organized in the model of London University. The University offers teaching and research programmes in campuses of the University. The 68 University Departments of study and research are spread over in 4 campuses organized into 18 schools, each offer Post graduate courses in respective specialization, part-time and full-time PhD programmes , Diploma and Certificate programmes. Accessing the need for educating a large number of people in the country, the University offers both U.G and P.G education through the Institute of Distance Education.

About the Department

The Department of Counselling Psychology, University of Madras was started in the year 2015. The Department Offers PG, Mphil and Research (Ph.D) programs in Counselling Psychology. The Department also offers PG diploma program in counselling and psychotherapy, Diploma in Learning Disability and Diploma in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Currently 150 students have registered under various programs in this Department. The courses are designed considering diversity in rapidly changing and globalized society, and the need for counselors in every field. Attention is also paid to the complex ecological influences on individuals, groups and communities. Our Master's and Doctoral programs address the needs of individuals, couples and families across the lifespan in terms of research, teaching and counselling practice. Our students have performed consistently well in research, winning honors for Best papers in numerous International programs. Our first batch students were placed as Corporate trainers, school/ college counselors and College lecturers.

The Department also runs a Student Counselling Centre for counselling both students and staff of the University. Additionally, many welfare programs are also conducted by the centre.

Department Faculty Profile


Dr.S.Thenmozhi, Professor and Head, Department of Counselling Psychology, University of Madras, has 20 years of teaching experience in Psychology and Counselling. The Department of Counselling Psychology, under her leadership, has conducted numerous Special Lectures, Workshops, Seminars and Symposiums on the topics of Counselling and Psychotherapy. She has also conducted 3 International Conferences on the Topics of "Child and Women Mental health", "Enriching Employee Engagement in Organization- Role of Psychology" and "Bridging Theory and Practice – Theory of Mind". She has completed a UGC-UPE II Major Research Project on "Psycho and Music Therapy" for children in conflict with the law.

Dr.Thenmozhi has over 20 years of experience as a Consultant Psychologist at Sundaram Medical Foundation Hospital, Chennai. For over 10 years she had been conducting screening camps during summer to identify children with learning disabilities and other developmental disabilities and to make sure they get the appropriate remedial measures and therapies along with parent counselling. Dr.Thenmozhi also conducts special counselling services for the family court in Madras High Court, Chennai from 2006 till date. She organizes many parent training workshops, diploma courses and certificate programs in Psychological Counselling and Special Educator training. Dr. Thenmozhi is a Lifetime Member in Indian Association of Applied Psychologists, Member in American Psychological Association and Member in Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health based in UK.

Dr.Thenmozhi has been practicing as Consultant Psychologist at Sundaram Medical Foundation (SMF) Annanagar from 1998 to 2015.

As a part of Extension services she had been visiting the Family court of Madras High Court from 2006 to 2012 as Hony. Counselling Psychologist for counselling couples going through divorce.

Dr.Thenmozhi is Hony. Director of Srishti Special School (for children with Learning disability, attention problem and Autism spectrum disorders). She has received Best Institution Award from the then Chief Minister Dr.J.Jayalalitha in August 2014, and Award for excellence in services in the field of Learning Disabilty from TRIKA in November 2016.

Additionally, Dr.S.Thenmozhi has authored three books on Counselling and has published numerous papers in peer reviewed journals and presented numerous papers in both International and National Conferences on the topics of Counselling and Psychotherapy.


Dr. U. Vijayabanu is a Guest Faculty at the Department of Counselling Psychology, University of Madras and is an experienced faculty with a demonstrated history of working in the professional training and coaching industry. She has experience in HR Consulting, Coaching, Organizational Development and Team Building. Dr. Vijayabanu is working with an NGO in Malaysia for developing training modules and assessments for the Indian Population living there. She is also an invited subject expert at AMIST University, Malaysia and has published nearly 30 research articles in national and international journals. Served as a resource person for workshops / seminars / conferences.


Ms. Vidya Muralidharan is a Guest Faculty at the Department of Counselling Psychology, University of Madras and is a clinical psychologist with over 6 years' experience. She is a consultant clinical and neuropsychologist in Mercury hospital and in Aashiana psychiatric hospital Chennai. She is also a guest faculty in the Department of Clinical Psychology, Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk. She has also conducted corporate training programs for organizations like Royal Bank of Scotland, Citibank, Bank of America, Ford India Flextronics and Johnson lifts.


Ms. Sonali Srinivasan is a Guest Faculty at the Department of Counselling Psychology, University of Madras and is trained from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and she practices as a Consultant Psychologist and Psychotherapist at multi-specialty, tertiary care private hospitals in Chennai. She has worked in the areas of Child and Adolescent Counselling, Psychopathology (including Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Psychosomatic Symptoms), Developmental Disorders (LD, ADHD), Psycho-Oncology, addressing Distress associated with Physical Health Conditions, Pain Management, Managing Stress, Couples Counselling and Grief Therapy. She has also received training in Clinical Art Therapy.


Ms. Shalini L is a Teaching Research Fellow in the Department of Counselling Psychology. As part of her Ph.D, she is conducting groundbreaking research on the psychological health of transgenders and providing psychological care for transgenders. She has made significant contributions to the Department of Counselling through lectures, professional activities and publications. She completed her Post Graduation in University of Madras and M.Phil in Women's Christian College (WCC). She has secured university rank in UG and First in her PG Examination.


Ms. Sherin Lee Thomas is a Teaching Research Fellow in the Department of Counselling Psychology and an experienced Educator and Counselling Psychologist with a demonstrated history of working in the health care field for the past 10 years. Skilled in organizational leadership, people management, team building and teaching. A result oriented mental health professional actively involved in University teaching, supervision/ training of budding counsellors and private counselling practice. Founder of Cherith Brook Counselling Center (www.cherithbrook.in); a practicing Counselling Psychologist for the past 6 years. Ms. Sherin has acquired experience as an educator, clinician, consultant, counsellor, psychologist, center head and manager with wide exposure working in various settings including hospitals, colleges, school, Christian ministry as well as non- governmental organizations and primarily works with children, teen and adults.


Ms. Darshini Madanagopal is currently an UGC - Senior Research Fellow and teaches at the Department of Counselling Psychology. She completed her M.Sc. and M.Phil in Psychology at the University of Madras. She is currently pursuing her research degree on Metacognition and has published papers in international journals on her research topic. She was also the recipient of the best paper award at an International Conference at NIMHANS.
